BAY CITY -- A $20-million investment brings more work to a MidMichigan General Motors plant.
GM says it's not only bringing new product but also a new commitment to the area.
Gerald Johnson, GM Manufacturing Manager, says "I'd like to announce we're about to make a $20-million investment commitment to Bay City to produce camshafts for the next generation Ecotec engine."
Those Ecotec four-cylinder engines are in models like the Chevrolet Malibu and Equinox, the Buick LaCrosse and new Regal, also the GMC Terrain.
Joe Mazzeo, plant manager for Bay City Powertrain, says "The $20-million really works on taking part of our existing tooling, refurbishing it, reconfiguring it, as well as bringing in new tooling where it's necessary so that it allows us to build this new, really complicated camshaft."
Bay City is no stranger to making camshafts. Last August it announced Bay City would be producing camshafts for the Chevrolet Volt and Cruze.
Todd McDaniel, UAW Local 362 Chairperson, says "The connection between quality and job security is direct."
With this $20-million investment, General Motors has invested a total of $62.5 million this year alone. The additional 15 jobs brings the total to 113 this year.
Bay City Mayor Charles Brunner says, "We're going to be around for a long time, and I think that what this says, all this work to this plant."
The plant manager says the plant expects to produce 220,000 camshafts a year, which means they would go into 220,000 vehicles.
General Motors officials say they're not releasing information as to when the re-tooling would begin.
