GRAND HAVEN (AP) -- West Michigan authorities say a 76-year-old Lake Ann man who was caught in a rip current in Lake Michigan has apparently drowned.

Department of Public Safety officials say Richard Habermas was swimming with his wife about 3 p.m. Thursday in the lake off Grand Haven State Park, when she lost sight of him in the waves.

Reports say bystanders pulled the man from the water, and an off-duty doctor at the beach performed CPR until emergency personnel arrived. Habermas was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Officials said Habermas was submerged five to 10 minutes.

An official cause of death is pending.
