(AP) -- LANSING, Mich. - Michigan Democratic gubernatorial candidate Virg Bernero is expected to pick Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence to be his running mate.
A person close to the Bernero campaign told The Associated Press Friday that Lawrence has been selected. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the campaign has not yet announced her name.
Lawrence was elected the first black and first woman mayor of Southfield in 2001.
The Bernero campaign says it plans to introduce its lieutenant governor choice Saturday morning at Detroit's Cobo Center, where Democrats are holding their state convention.
A campaign spokesman says Bernero made the offer to only one candidate.
GOP gubernatorial candidate Rick Snyder announced Wednesday that state Rep. Brian Calley of Portland will be his running mate.
