(AP) -- The Michigan House has taken a step toward repealing parts of a law that imposes extra fees on drivers for certain offenses. The first bill in what sponsors call a phased-in, partial repeal of the driver responsibility fee program unanimously passed the state House on Wednesday. It now goes to the Senate.

The bills would repeal parts of a fee program enacted in 2003. The bills passed Wednesday would eliminate some of the responsibility fees starting in 2012. It applies to relative minor offenses such as not having proof of insurance on hand when a motorist is pulled over.

Fees associated with drunken driving and other serious offenses would remain in place. The bills would cut into state revenue but it wasn't immediately clear by how much.
