GENESEE CO. -- The following is a message from Genesee County:

Thousands of eligible Genesee County residents for the state’s Adult Benefit Waiver program can now enroll in the Genesee Health Plan’s Plan A from now until Nov. 30, 2010. Enrollment had been closed by the state of Michigan since May 2009.

“We are pleased that the thousands of Genesee County residents who are eligible for Plan A can now enroll,” said Jim Milanowski, GHP’s Chief Operating Officer. “This means that the Genesee Health Plan can help even more Genesee County families who are struggling to afford basic health care services. These are our friends and neighbors who, through no fault of their own, have lost their jobs or health insurance.”

A single person may be eligible for GHP’s Plan A if his or her income is less than $700 a month if employed, or $316 a month if unemployed. For two people in the household, they must have a combined income of less than $1,200 a month if employed, or $425 if they’re unemployed.

Plan A covers more services than GHP’s Plan B and has lower co-pays. Plan A covers doctor visits, prescription drugs, emergency room visits, after-hours urgent care, ambulatory services, mental health services and outpatient surgery. GHP urges eligible residents of Genesee County to call (810) 232-7740 for more information about Plan A.

Milanowski said the state’s opening of Plan A not only helps eligible patients out but also will help save dollars for the health plan.

“With enrollment being closed, we had to enroll thousands of Genesee County residents eligible for Plan A on Plan B, which is more costly,” Milanowski said. “This move will allow Genesee Health Plan to provide recipients with the services they need while relieving significant financial strain for GHP.”

Launched in 2001, Genesee Health Plan provides basic health services to about 25,000 adults in Genesee County who don’t have health insurance. Services provided include doctor visits, lab tests, X-rays and basic prescriptions.
