(AP) -- A west Michigan woman known for her giving nature has celebrated her 100th birthday. Geneva Alderink Vander Vliet celebrated Wednesday surrounded by family and friends. The Holland High School graduate once supported her parents by working as a secretary after her father became blind, and has spanned the advent of radio and the Internet while raising a family of her own.
She and her husband adopted several children, including premature twin boys that Geneva refused to separate. Geneva also took in her sister who was widowed after her husband was killed in World War II.
She was at her husband's bedside every day for six years as he died from Alzheimer's.
Sue Brown, Geneva's daughter, tells The Holland Sentinel her mother is "a very, very giving person."
