Dental coverage has gone from being a common commodity to a luxury.
With many businesses dumping its plan or requiring more money from customers, it's getting more difficult to cover it.
However, there's a MidMichigan program that makes sure students don't get left out.
Tuesday was a regular school day, but it's also a visit to the dentist for around 20 Buena Vista High School students.
Rita Cheek, Buena Vista High School Principal says, "So many students don't have the dental care with the cost of health insurance as we know and the job economy, this is a great opportunity for them."
Around 85% of Buena Vista Township high schoolers receive government assistance.
Health Delivery's dental mobile pulls up to the school and provides free cleaning and exams for those who would not be able to afford the service.
Ashleigh VanBlarcom, an SVSU nursing student says, "As long as the school continues to have a need for the dental program, they're going to keep bringing it out."
Saginaw Valley State University nursing students coordinated the event for the first time visit to Buena Vista High School.
"It was part of our intervention, our clinic experience is to take assets from the community and bring them back to the community so they know how to use their assets and link them."
Cheek says, "We all have that phobia of dentists, so that this helps not all, but some, cure that phobia as well."
The federally funded program allows the dental-mobile to stop by school every six months so students don't miss a checkup.
Instead of taking the better part of the day, it takes around 20 to 30 minutes to get clients in and out.
Health Delivery provides the services to many MidMichigan counties including Saginaw, Bay, Midland, Arenac, and Tuscola counties.
