DETROIT -- Former President Bill Clinton and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Virg Bernero shared the stage at Renaissance High School in Detroit Sunday. Clinton offered his big endorsement for the Lansing mayor who is down 20+ points in the polls with a little more than a week before the November election.
“Let me tell ya, if every Michigan voters knew that the mayor has the fastest growing economy in Michigan, 7th of any metropolitan area in America, that he cut $40 million budget and did not raise taxes and instead cut the size of government 20 percent, this election would be over,” Clinton told a crowd of about 500 party faithful.
He was critical of Republican challenger Rick Snyder. “He basically says, “I don’t have an economic plan. I got the Republican Governors (Association) spending a lot of money to tell you how great I am.”
Clinton also praised the round of speakers that led up to his remarks, which included Democratic Attorney General candidate and Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton and Secretary of State hopeful Jocelyn Benson among others.
The 42nd president then went Rick Snyder’s native Ann Arbor along with Battle Creek to continue campaign efforts there. Meanwhile Snyder campaign officials said they are confident Clinton's visit won't negatively impact Snyder's lead in the race.
