Severe storms are on their way to Mid-Michigan.

Rapidly growing low pressure over Minnesota will send a very strong cold front across our area, causing potential for severe thunderstorms and other destructive weather.

The most severe activity is expected from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm, but will clear by sunset.

Wind gusts of up to 60 mph are possible during the storm, but wind gusts up to 70 mph could be possible following the eye of the storm. A high wind warning is in effect until 9 p.m. this evening.

70 mph gusts have already been seen in the Great Plains region.

This storm is expected to be the third worst storm ever recorded in this area. The Weather Channel compared the storm to a “hurricane on land”.

Tornadoes are possible until this evening. They are most probable in Ohio, southern Michigan and Indiana.

A tornado warning is in effect until noon today for Clare, Gratiot, Isabella, Calhoun, Clinton, Eaton, Ingham and Jackson counties.

Take proper precautions if you are experiencing severe weather. Go to the center of the basement or lowest floor of your home, and stay away from all windows.

This storm has already traveled through sections of the Midwest, including Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois.

The National Weather Service said this storm could surpass the strength of the storm that sank the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975.

We have received reports of down power lines on the west side of the state.

Take proper precautions if you are experiencing severe weather. Go to the center of the basement or lowest floor of your home, and stay away from all windows. Also, be prepared with flashlights and non-perishable food if the area loses power. Be sure to have a battery operated television available as well so you can stay up to date on the storms with NBC25.

Our NBC25 weather team is currently covering these developments, and we will provide updates as they arrive. Tune in to our 6 p.m. newscast for more detailed information.
