LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan fire marshal is urging state residents to change the batteries in their smoke alarms this weekend.

State Fire Marshal Ronald Farr says having working smoke alarms is a "simple, effective way to reduce home fire deaths."

Michigan's Bureau of Fire Services says it makes sense for consumers to change the alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when they change their clocks to Standard Time in the early morning hours of Sunday.

The BFS also encourages homeowners to install at least one fire extinguisher in or near the kitchen.
