BAY CITY -- “It’s not easy. It’s never easy,” said Bay County Commissioner Don Tilley immediately following a county commission meeting in which nearly half a dozen jobs were slashed to trim a $1.5 million budget shortfall.
The most recent changes will save an estimated $640,000. Several clerical positions were cut in the county Clerk’s office, Prosecutor’s office; Register of Deeds and in criminal defense offices. A building painter position was also eliminated.
The part-time commissioners also voted to take health care coverage away from incoming commissioners; a perk that current members have. Tilley said more cuts may come in the future as financial forecasts look more precarious.
