FLINT -- The following is a message from the Genesee Co. Prosecutor's office:
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton announced today that he has charged three Flint teenagers as adults for breaking into the home of a 93-year old woman on Monday. The incident led to one of the teens being shot in the leg after the teen first shot at police.
Prosecutor Leyton said that around 8:00 PM on Monday evening, the 93-year old woman’s neighbor called 9-1-1 to report three individuals were seen removing a screen from the back of the woman’s home in the area of Begole and Seneca streets in the City of Flint. Upon arriving on the scene, officers found two suspects, later identified as Deonte Issac Gray, 15, of Flint, and D’Angelo Simmons, 14, of Flint, fleeing on foot and a chase ensued.
Police reports indicate that Gray had a gun and fired at the officers as he was fleeing and the officers returned fire shooting him in the leg. Police also used a taser gun on Gray before he was apprehended and arrested. After a short chase, Simmons was also apprehended by police and arrested. The third suspect in the case, Delontay Jamal McCraw, 15, of Flint, was found by police hiding in the woman’s basement and he too was arrested.
Police discovered the 93-year old victim asleep in her bed. Her home had been ransacked and several doors were damaged.
Prosecutor Leyton has charged all three teenagers as adults. McCraw and Simmons have each been charged with one count of Home Invasion 1st Degree. Gray has been charged with Assault with Intent to Murder, Home Invasion 1st Degree, and Felony Firearm. Given the ages of the defendants, adult sentencing is not automatic and would have to go through a Circuit Court hearing process to take effect.
“The youth in our community need to know,” said Prosecutor David Leyton, “if you do adult-type crimes, you will be prosecuted in adult fashion and you will pay the price.”
“We’re not playing kids games here and teenagers will be charged as adults to the fullest extent of the law based on the evidence and the facts of each individual case,” Leyton said.
