SAGINAW -- Saginaw County Sheriff Bill Federspiel is utilizing a recent change in state law that allows vehicles to be seized from people who are busted a third time for drunken driving. He now has a 1999 Jeep Wrangler confiscated from a man who was arrested with a blood-alcohol content level four times the legal limit. That vehicle is now set to be auctioned off.
“If someone has been convicted of drunk driving third offense, we believe that person has been drunk driving for quite some time,” the sheriff said. “It’s just not the third time he’s been doing it, it’s the third time they have been caught and convicted,” he said.
He is hoping to use funds from such auctions to pay for anti-drunk driving efforts and fund between 50 and 100 extra hours of road patrols in the county.
