(AP) -- A court-appointed monitor is due to give his next report on the status of Michigan's troubled foster care system. Kevin Ryan is the watchdog over a settlement of a lawsuit aimed at making improvements in foster care. Michigan had agreed to many changes in 2008, including hundreds of new hires to reduce caseloads of workers who oversee kids.
In March, Ryan said Michigan needs more foster parents and too many children don't have permanent families. He's expected to give an update Tuesday to federal Judge Nancy Edmunds in Detroit.
This is the final report before Rick Snyder takes over as governor. It's possible that new management will be tapped at theDepartment of Human Services, which is in charge of the foster care system.
