LANSING -- Wednesday, the Food Bank Council of Michigan received a grant for $700,000 from the Walmart Foundation Michigan State Giving Program. The grant will help Food Bank Council of Michigan to provide over two million meals to people facing hunger and will also be used to support the Food Assistance Program Outreach—a program to assist eligible people in applying for Food Assistance (also known as Food Stamps) which is the first line of defense in combating hunger.
“Walmart has been very generous to the Food Bank Council in recent years and we are so grateful to for all of their support,” said Jane Marshall, Executive Director, Food Bank Council of Michigan. “This most recent donation not only helps us to buy food for local food banks but also gives area food banks the trucks needed for them to deliver food to the food pantries and soup kitchens in their areas.”
In addition, Walmart announced a $100,000 grant to the Food Bank Council of Michigan as a part of their Associate Choice Program, an online campaign where Walmart associates voted directly for a nonprofit to receive funding in their home state. Walmart also donated three food delivery trucks to Michigan food banks across the state.
“It is sad to think of people going hungry any time of the year, but particularly during the holiday season,” said Marshall. “With the need for food being at an all time high, it is wonderful to have the generosity of companies like Walmart to help serve hungry families in Michigan.”
