LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan's Legislature has just voted to spend $150 million for toxic site cleanup. Environmental experts say that covers only the most critical hazards and leaves many other sites languishing.
The Detroit Free Press says Michigan came close to having to shut down contamination cleanups statewide until last week's vote to finance work for some projects for three to four years.
Experts say Michigan has at least 11,000 contaminated sites, many of them without owners.
The state has used up the money from two voter-approved bond issues that were used to clean up contamination for the last 22 years.
The Michigan Environmental Council is calling for a 3/8-cent sales tax dedicated to environmental programs on the 2012 ballot.
Group spokesman James Clift says the state "can't keep going like this."
