SAGINAW COUNTY -- Mid-Michigan drivers may be wondering why much of the salt dumped on roads after this past weekend’s snowstorm did not melt many ice patches by Monday morning’s drive time.

Officials with the Michigan Department of Transportation say salt will be most effective once late night and early morning temperatures rise past 15 degrees. Gregg Brunner with M-DOT’s Bay City office said crews are mixing liquid calcium chloride to help activate the salt at lower temperatures.
