(AP) -- The manager of Freeland-based MBS International Airport says it's landed 80 percent of the funds needed to finish a $48 million passenger terminal. The airport is in Saginaw County's Tittabawassee Township and serves the Midland, Bay City and Saginaw areas.

Airport Manager Jeff Nagel tells The Saginaw News that Dow Chemical Co. has pledged $3 million and Dow Corning Corp. $750,000 toward the project. Dow Corning is a joint venture of Midland-based Dow Chemical Co. and Corning, N.Y.-based Corning Inc.

Nagel says the airport hopes to get the rest of the money though the Federal Aviation Administration. Work has started at the terminal, which is to open in 2013. It will replace a terminal that opened in 1965.

The airport had 589,798 travelers in 1998 but only 267,436 last year.
