(AP) -- Lindsey Dawes says she thought it was a longshot she'd be called when she registered to be a bone marrow donor in 2004 at a Grand Valley State University health fair. Six years later, the 24-year-old native of Flushing near Flint learned she was a candidate, and tests proved she was a match for a 54-year-old California woman with leukemia. Dawes this month donated her bone marrow, which was flown the same day to the recipient.
The Flint Journal says donor registrants have a 1-in-200 chance of being a match for a U.S. patient. Dawes moved to Arizona in April. She says she hasn't met the woman but hears she's responding well to the transplant.
Dawes says saving a life was worth a little pain.
