(AP) -- Outgoing U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she plans a visit next week to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The California Democrat said Tuesday that she will stop at the annual car industry event Monday, the first day of media previews.

The show is open for the public Jan 15-23. At Cobo Center. Pelosi says a string manufacturing base is vital to the nation's security and competitiveness. She says Detroit's automakers are central to efforts to grow a "clean, green economy."

Pelosi is stepping down as the House's top leader with the swearing-in of the new Republican majority that won control in the November election.
