Residents being asked to move to city hall
DURAND -- Authorities in Shiawassee County have evacuated residents within a mile of a derailed Canadian National Railway freight train where a tank car carrying hydrochloric acid overturned and started leaking. No injuries are reported.
Railroad spokesman Patrick Waldron says about 11 cars on the eastbound train derailed about 5:30 p.m. He says local authorities ordered the evacuations as a precaution. The accident delayed an Amtrak passenger train.
The site is in Vernon Township, near Durand. It's a lightly populated area about 20 miles west-southwest of Flint. A sheriff's dispatcher who didn't give her name says emergency workers went door to door and safely evacuated all residents in the affected area. She says some people were taken to Durand City Hall.
There's no immediate estimate of how many people are affected.
