(AP) -- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is appearing in court with his father for the first time since federal authorities filed pay-to-play charges against them. A judge is holding the first hearing Monday since an indictment was filed in December alleging extortion, bribery and fraud during Kilpatrick's years at city hall.

U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds wants to see Bernard Kilpatrick, the younger Kilpatrick, former Detroit water boss Victor Mercado and others. The indictment describes a brazen pattern of corruption in which contractors paid kickbacks or hired a Kilpatrick pal to keep business.

The charges are on top of tax and fraud charges filed last summer against Kwame Kilpatrick. He's in prison for violating probation in an unrelated case in state court.
