(AP) -- U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow plans to visit the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Michigan Democrat says she'll stop at the annual car industry event Monday, the first day of media previews. The show is open for the public Friday through Jan. 23 at Cobo Center.
Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also had planned to attend but The Detroit News says she canceled after fellow Democrat Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot through the head in an attack Saturday in Tucson that killed six people.
Pelosi said a string manufacturing base is vital to the nation's security and competitiveness. She says Detroit's automakers are central to efforts to grow a "clean, green economy." Stabenow is co-chair of the Senate Manufacturing Caucus.
