(AP) -- Police say three Michigan sisters and their mother on a family trip to Indiana died when their SUV veered down an Interstate 69 bridge embankment and into the path of an oncoming freight train. A baby in an infant seat was injured.

The DeKalb County Sheriff's Department says Sunday's crash killed 45-year-old Barbara Pierson, 19-year-old twins Bessie and Margaret and 14-year-old Elizabeth. They were from Howell, 45 miles northwest of Detroit.

Margaret Pierson's 9-month-old son had a broken leg and other injuries but was in good condition Monday. Police say the SUV overturning on tracks near Waterloo, about 25 miles north of Fort Wayne. The train then pushed it about 2,000 feet.

Barbara Pierson tells WHMI-FM her sister-in-law and nieces were in Indiana for a family gathering.
