DETROIT (AP) -- Detroit Mayor Dave Bing says the recovery in the auto industry is visible in more excitement and enthusiasm at the North American International Auto Show.
The former NBA great toured Cobo Center on Wednesday, checking out the latest offerings from companies including General Motors and Ford. He says a comeback for automakers such as GM, Ford and Chrysler is positive for the city and the state.
The show opens to the public Saturday and runs through Jan. 23.
A regional board that took over Cobo's operation from the city of Detroit pumped about $3 million in upgrades to the venue, including $400,000 to repair leaks in the building's roof. Bing says he's pleased with improvements. A 25,000-square-foot expansion is planned for the 2012 show.
