(AP) -- The University of Michigan is sending more deferred admissions letters this academic year because of an increase in applications and a cut in the planned size of the entering class.
The Detroit Free Press says applications to the Ann Arbor school are up about 18 percent this year. At the same time, the university has reduced its target for the 2011 freshman class to 5,700.
The university says it admitted about 6,500 freshmen for 2010-11 - about 400 more than its target. Recruitment director Erica Sanders says Michigan must be more cautious about its early admissions decisions until it knows how big an increase in applications it will get.
Sanders says the university hopes to be able to admit a larger number of wait-listed students this academic cycle.
