New proposal would last three years
FLINT -- Flint Mayor Dayne Walling is trying a second pitch of his proposal to city council members for a millage to fund city jail operations. The proposal would have to be approved by council before going to the voters.
The revised proposal would ask voters to approve an extra 2-mills for three years, costing an extra $3 a month per home valued at approximately $40,000. The previous proposal, struck down by council members had a six year life span attached to it.
Walling said re-opening the city jail is a vital part of the city’s crime fighting strategy. “Our officers know that they’ve got to have a place to get criminals off the streets,” Walling said, adding that the county jail doesn’t often have room for suspects in city crimes.
9th Ward City Councilman Scott Kincaid supported the measure last time around, said he will support it again. He told NBC25 he believed other members would sign on, giving it enough votes to pass the time around.
Council members are scheduled to meet Monday evening and will discuss the issue as part of other agenda items.
