Family and friends said their final farewells to Elsie Mae Fortin in Bay City today. She is the grandmother of pop singer Madonna.
Ninety-nine year old Fortin died Wednesday, about 3 months before she would have turned 100 years old.
She died at her home on North Dean Street in Bay City.
The Bay City Times say Madonna was not at Saturday’s funeral.
The Rev. Craig Albrecht gave her funeral sermon at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church.
Albrecht told the Bay City Times he was unable to go to his own grandmother’s funeral. Her name was also Elsie Mae.
"I am honored to be able to serve at this funeral, for this Elsie Mae," the paper quoted him as saying.
According to Fortin’s obituary, she was born in Standish. She and her husband William Fortin had eight children, 36 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren.
