If Mother Nature brings the expected ice and snow to mid-Michigan, some students will be getting out a little late for summer break this year.
The state built six snow days into the school year for public schools. Some schools in mid-Michigan, like Lake Fenton, have already used them all up.
“If we had to add a day to the end of the year, I don’t know if I’d like that,” says Birch Run High School Junior Josh Hobson.
The Birch Run School District has one more day it can call off, without extending the school year. School District Superintendent David Bush says the school year schedule is not taken into consideration when deciding whether to cancel school due to driving conditions. Safety is his only concern.
“Obviously we want them in school, but if we have to make a decision, we'll make it in the best interest of kids,” said Superintendent Bush.
