Bay City Public Schools closes the district for Friday, but it's not because of weather or illness.
The superintendent says he has to decide what is best for taxpayers and the functions of the school district.
Bay City Western is in the final four for boy's basketball Friday.
The Western complex makes up 26% of the district.
If enrollment dips below 75% Friday, it could financially devastate the district.
Bay City Public Schools Superintendent Doug Newcombe says, "If I gamble on the 75% and we don't have enough kids, I'm either going to have to pay staff to come in an extra day or I lose $300,000 in state aid revenue and that's a pretty expensive gamble."
Newcombe also says Friday, as well as Thursday and Wednesday will have to be made up.
