SEBEWAING TWP. -- Nearly nine years ago, a thief smashed through the window of Gettel Equipment, and stole $2,500 worth of merchandise. Authorities used the blood from the window to track the suspect down. But, due to the statute of limitations, he can’t be charged.
In June 2002, Leonard Christopher allegedly robbed the Sebewaing Township store, and got away with thousands of dollars of equipment.
The Huron County Sheriff's Department and Michigan State Police tested the DNA found on the blood on the window, and linked it to a prison inmate.
According to prison records, Christopher is serving three to twenty years in prison for another larceny. Authorities interviewed in April 2010, and he admitted to committing the 2002 robbery.
Since the case is nearly nine years old, Michigan law prohibits Christopher from being sentenced for this crime. However, Christopher did say there was an accomplice in the theft. He did not give the culprit’s name.
Investigators are continuing to look into the case in order to bring justice.
