ANN ARBOR -- An openly gay University of Michigan student has sued Michigan’s former assistant attorney general, Andrew Shirvell.
Armstrong was running for U of M student president. Shirvell is a University of Michigan graduated, and had protested outside the student’s home saying Armstrong was promoting a “radical homosexual agenda” on campus.
Shirvell also created a blog called “Chris Armstrong Watch.” The blog sparked controversy, attacking Armstrong as a "racist, elitist, liar" and "Satan's representative on the student assembly."
In September 2010, Andrew Shirvell appeared on CNN’s Anderson Cooper, defending his stance against Chris Armstrong. The Assistant Attorney General cliamed his pickets were politically based, and should be protected as Freedom of Speech. You can watch the full interview here.
The media coverage caused then Attorney General Mike Cox to review the case. In November 2010, Shirvell was fired from his position as Assistant Attorney General for the State of Michigan.
Now, the Associated Press reports that Armstrong has sued Shirvell for stalking and causing emotional distress. He’s asking for more than $25,000 in damages.
