WASHINGTON (AP) — Leading Republicans are renewing their opposition to tax increases as President Barack Obama prepares to put forth his prescriptions for slow economic growth and national indebtedness.

Appearing on nationally broadcast interview shows ahead of Obama's speech Wednesday, the No. 2 House Republican and the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee both said tax increases shouldn't be on the table for budget discussions. Congressional Republicans and Obama avoided a partial government shutdown last week by agreeing on a stopgap spending bill.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor tells CBS's "The Early Show" that "most people understand that Washington doesn't have a revenue problem. It has a spending problem." Wisconsin's Rep. Paul Ryan tells ABC's "Good Morning America" he's glad Obama "is joining the conversation" about federal fiscal problems.
