FLINT -- More than 300 teachers with Flint Community Schools will be receiving pink slips in a massive effort to reduce costs and head off the impact of state cuts in education spending.

Officials with Superintendent Linda Thompson’s office tell NBC25 notices will go to 306 teachers, including 184 elementary instructors and 122 in secondary education such as high school.

The move is expected to balance a shortfall of up to $25 million which includes projected losses from state cuts in K-12 education spending, and overall declining enrollment.

Board of Education member David Davenport voted against the decision at a meeting Wednesday night.  He said district administration did not specify which programs would be harmed by the cuts and that the reductions should have started in administration first where up to $1 million could be saved.

However Thompson spokesman Bob Campbell said administrators also received pink slips in a previous round of layoffs, showing shared sacrifice. This round of layoffs will go into effect at the end of the current school year in June. Superintendent Linda Thompson could not be reached directly for comment.

Feedback: Do you think Flint school leaders can prevent harm to the quality of education given these cuts?  Do you think a solution can be reached in Lansing to reduce or eliminate the proposed cuts to education spending? Comment below and let us know!
