Last minute help is still available this weekend
MT. MORRIS -- If you haven't finished (or even started) your taxes don't worry. The traditional April 15th deadline (today) for filing has been moved to Monday night, because today is Emancipation Day. NBC 25 and Connectmidmichigan.com visited Liberty Tax Service in Mt. Morris today, and they tell us that many people who owe tend to ignore the deadline, but that could end up being a costly mistake.
Carrie Sekelsky is the owner of Liberty, and she says that you may think it tough to find last minute help, but actually business has been slow. That's because the tough economic times have led people expecting refunds to file early this year, freeing up time for you if you need help. She says they will be working through the weekend to make sure everyone gets assistance. And if you were thinking of missing the deadline? Think again. "They need to come in especially if they fell they're gonna owe, by April 18th," says Carrie. "We either need to get an extension filed for them or to get their refund filed because the failure to pay penalty is 5% a month so they need to file as soon as they can."
Carrie says filing now will save you money in the long run with the IRS. The hours at Liberty in Mt. Morris on this final weekend of preparation for the deadline are Saturday 9-5, Sunday 12-4 and Monday 9-9.
