On May 3, 2011, voters will decided whether four Bridgeport Township leaders should lose their jobs.
Township Clerk Lee Carpenter and Trustees Bruce Winchell, Darlene Miller and Frank Morrison face possible recall.
The recall claims they ignored a court order to stop work on a bridge off State Street.
Clerk Lee Carpenter says it is unfair. He says when the township got the court order, the township told the judge they weren’t working on the project. The court then asked MDOT to stop work, and MDOT did.
“They don’t have to tell the truth in a recall petition,” said Carpenter.
He says the law should be changed to make sure voters are told the truth.
"They can tell all kinds of lies and force a township to have a recall.”
“That was the township’s bridge. It is the township’s responsibility,” said Dawn Benkert, who supports the recall.
Benkert lives by the bridge, and says when she complained about the bridge to town leaders they were unresponsive.
