A local farmer wins a statewide award for his work with urban gardening.
Jacky King, who manages the Harvesting Earth Farm in Genesee County's Beecher district, received the Small Farmer of the Year Award this month from the State of Michigan.
He's been working on putting up greenhouses, growing food, and using alternative energy in the urban Saginaw Street corridor since 2008.
"I have a funny feeling that we'll be able to expand to a bigger area. We already purchased 27 acres, so we're talking about possibly putting in about 50 other green houses from now to next year," says King.
King says he's now being considered for a national award.
Grants have paid for the project so far.
King says he wants to give the future hope with the emerging alternative energy industry.
