MIDLAND CO. -- A 16 year old has been sentenced for sexually assaulting several high school girls.
In May of 2010, Anthony Haveman allegedly sexually assaulted a Bay City Central High School student on two occasions.
Just five months later, he moved to Midland Dow High School where the prosecution says he cornered a girl in a classroom, and sexually assaulted her.
Thursday, a Midland County Circuit Court judge sentenced Haveman to 5 to 15 years in prison for the rape.
One of the victim’s mothers was present at the sentencing. She had planned on reading a statement, but became too emotional. So, the prosecution read it for her. Part of it stated that the sexual assault, “will continue to haunt my daughter for the rest of her life. I just don't understand how someone like you could have entered into a very prominent high school with a record of your past as it is, I do blame the school system as well as the court system and yourself."
Psychological examinations revealed that Haveman had been sexually assaulted as a child. Evaluations also indicated that he had attempted suicide several times. Further, they showed that he was capable of both child and peer rape, and was deemed a “sexual predator.”
Judge Michael Beale stated that, while Haveman has had a difficult life, this does not excuse his actions.
