JOPLIN, MO. -- Update: May 24th, 6:55 p.m.
Nightly News has reported that severe storms are hitting Oaklahoma City, Oaklahoma. Potentially deadly tornados could rip through the area tonight.
Those storms could continue through the nation, and hit Joplin, Mo. once again.
Update: May 24th, 10:15 a.m.
Missouri Governor Jay Nixon says the number of people killed by the tornado has now reached 116. Sadly, that number could still climb as crews continue to dig through the wreckage.
Reuters reports that President Barack Obama will visit the devistated area Tuesday.
Update: May 23rd, 2:06 p.m.
NBC News reports the death toll has gone up to 90.
A Missouri tornado has left at least 89 people dead, and NBC25 has just learned that more storms are hitting the area now.
MSNBC reports the F4 twister leveled most of Joplin, Mo. Dozens are dead, and emergency crews are still searching for missing people. The city’s mayor has declared a state of emergency, and has deployed the National Guard.
Even the hospital was demolished by Sunday’s storm. Those injured in the chaos are being taken to nearby hospitals in neighboring cities.
The Red Cross in the Missouri area reports they are providing shelter for those displaced by the storm. As of 12:30 a.m., the organization states they were providing shelter for about 110 people.
Fire Chief Mitch Randles tells MSNBC that the twister, “cut the city in half.”
