The Michigan Senate has passed a public school budget, according to the Associated Press.
Under the new proposal, schools could face up to $300 per pupil in cuts. However, $100 of that would be off-set by help for employee benefits. Schools can also work toward another $100 credit if they meet certain “best-financial practices” set in place by Governor Rick Snyder.
In a previous story, NBC25 wanted to know what qualified as a “best financial practice.” Rep. Paul Scott told it requires the following:
1. Schools must become policy holders on health insurance.
2: Consolidate services with other schools.
3: Take bids on outsourcing services.
4: Meet academic standards.
5. Teachers must pay 20% of health care benefits.

The AP reports these cuts are in addition to a $170 per student cut that’s already in place.
