HAMTRAMCK -- General Motors announced Wednesday that they have chosen to add two shifts and 25,00 jobs to a Michigan plant instead of a plant in Canada.
The Detroit based automaker is investing $69 million in the Hamtramck facility. The factory will assemble the new Chevrolet Malibu and the next-generation Impala.
Later this summer, the plant will be shut down to improve production lines for the Volt and Ampera.
GM leaders say it is part of their plan to invest in the United States.
"This plant is a tremendous plant- not the facility, the facility is great, but the people in it. “GM North American President Mark Reuss stated at the Hamtramck plant Wednesday. “And we got to witness first hand what it means to build something as what I think is the most technically sophisticated car on the planet, by one of the most skilled work forces in the world, right here in Detroit."
About 1,200 of the coming jobs will be new hires.
