A new study by the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that cell phones may cause brain cancer.
MSN News reports, “the experts classified cell phones as possibly carcinogenic to humans.’”
A WHO panel, made up of dozens of scientists from countries all around the world, claims that there is a higher risk for glioma, a form of brain cancer, in people who use cell phones.
While the WHO makes these claims, the National Cancer Institute reports that while cell phones emit radiofrequency (RF) energy, there is no specific information that links the devises to cancer. In fact, they report, “a large international study (Interphone) published in 2010 found that, overall, cell phone users have no increased risk for two of the most common types of brain tumor—glioma and meningioma. For the small proportion of study participants who reported spending the most total time on cell phone calls there was some increased risk of glioma, but the researchers considered this finding inconclusive.”
Medical experts are continuing to investigate whether cell phone usage plays a significant role in the development of brain cancer.
