It seems we went from winter right into summer this year with already record breaking temperatures in Michigan.

Even though summer doesn’t officially start until June 21st the Tri-Cities reached a high of 93 degrees Tuesday which is tied with the old record of 93 degrees set in 1933.

In Detroit it reached 95 degrees breaking the old record for June 7th of 93 degrees set in 1968.

The heat index (what the air feels like when factoring in humidity) Tuesday ranged from 100-105 degrees.

Heat advisories are already in effect today, as highs are expected to again tie or break records, with temps expected to be 2-4 degrees hotter than Tuesday, making the heat index flirt with 110 degrees.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer the following advice for dealing with hot weather:

- Drink more fluids. If you must be outside working or exercising, drink two to four glasses of cool fluids every hour.

- Do not drink fluids that contain alcohol, caffeine or large amounts of sugar. These actually cause you to lose more body fluid.

- Wear lightweight, light colored, loose-fitting clothing

- Stay indoors, if at all possible. If you do not have air conditioning, seek out a building that will give you a few hours respite from the heat.

- Never leave a child or pet inside a closed, parked vehicle.

The heat is especially dangerous for the very old and those with serious health problems. If you have an elderly neighbor or know someone who might be at risk, it’s a good to idea to visit them a few times a day to observe them for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
