TRAVERSE CITY -- Update: June 16, 10:00 p.m.

 

The Traverse City teen accused of murdering 16-year-old Carly Lewis pleads not guilty.

17-year-old Robert Jensen Schwander was arraigned by video from the Grand Traverse County Jail. 

Schwander, who is charged with open murder and faces life in prison, is the son of a Grand Traverse County deputy.

Investigators say he admitted to killing 16-year old Carly Lewis on June 2 in Traverse City and buried her body in a sand pit two days later.

His preliminary exam is set for June 27th.

Update: June 16th, 10:25 a.m.

The Associated Press reports Schwander is the son of a sheriff's deputy. 

Schwander is being charged as an adult for First Degree Murder.


Update: June 16th, 10:00 a.m.

The teen, who allegedly admitted to killing Carly Lewis, has now pleaded "not guilty."

7&4 News  reports Robert Jensen Schwander, 17, was arraigned Thursday morning.  His preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 27th.  If found guilty, he faces life in prison.  To read the full report, click here. 


Update: June 15th, 1:40 p.m.

The 17-year-old suspect's lawyer claims Carly's death was an "accident." While few details are being released at this time, Attorney Clarenc Gomrey tells the Associated Press, "the teen is 'distraught' and assisted police in recovering Carly Lewis' body."


Update: June 15th, 11:50 a.m.

The Associated Press reports a 17-year-old boy, who knew Carly, has admitted to killing her. 

Carly's body was found in a sand pile outside a city building. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday to determine the exact cause of death.

Authorities are not releasing the suspect's name until he has been arraigned.


Update: June 15th, 10:20 a.m.

7&4 News  reports that a suspect is in custody in connection to Carly Lewis' death, and is facing Open Murder charges.


The body of Carly Lewis, 16, of Traverse City has been found.

Traverse City police say the girl's body was found Tuesday evening after a 17 year old boy told investigators he killed Carly Lewis. Authorities found the body behind the Public Works Building off Woodmere Road in Traverse City.

NBC25's sister station, 7&4 News says the body was discovered in a pile of sand used for winter road mainenance. They are also report that police say the 17 year old boy knew Carly and this was not a random act. 

A news conference is planned for Wednesday morning.

Lewis was last seen the evening of June 2 after she left a friend's home.
