DENVER TOWNSHIP -- Tragic news out of Isabella County. A little boy has died in an ATV crash.
It happened Saturday night around 7 p.m. in the 9000 block of East Weidman Road in Denver Township.
The Isabella County Sheriff tells NBC25 a 15-year-old boy from Owosso was attempting to turn the ATV into a driveway when he lost control flipping the vehicle. The ATV rolled onto its side, trapping the passenger, 5-year-old Keagan Dunnam of Bath.
Dunnam was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The sheriff says speed played a factor in the crash.
"Obviously whether it’s an all-terrain vehicle, or a regular car, a boat, you really need to be conscientious about your speed. Most accidents obviously occur because of speed and not being able to control whatever you are driving," said Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski with the Isabella County Sheriff's Department.
Michigan law states that it is illegal for children under the age of 16 to operate an off road vehicle. Also, laws state that it is illegal to have a passanger on an ATV, unless it is a vehicle designed for more than one person.
Children under the age of 15 are also required by the state to take an ORV Safety Class in order to drive the vehicle outside of their parent's supervision.
The crash is under investigation.
