MONTROSE -- A fire has ripped through downtown Montrose.

Montrose Police tell NBC25 the fire broke out at an apartment building above the El Agave Mexican Restaurant.

We're told two people were in the apartment down the hall from the fire, and escaped by climbing down a balcony.

Delana Vroman witnessed the scene. She tells NBC25, “they had to pull some people out through the back windows because the stairway in between the two buildings was engulfed in flames or smoke, so they couldn't get out that way. So they pulled them out through the back windows."

Police say they don’t believe anyone else was in the building.  They’re still investigating what sparked the flames.
