Chief Todd Alexander rescued a child who was allegedly abducted by her father.
LAPEER -- Lapeer’s police chief tells NBC25, quick thinking and a little bit of luck is what helped him track down an abducted baby on his day off.
Chief Todd Alexander was off duty Monday morning, but heard the amber alert go out on his car’s scanner. Authorities from Port Huron were looking for a one year old girl that was believed to be abducted by her father, James Michael Smith.
Smith was said to be driving a Nissan frontier with Colorado plates. Chief Alexander spotted the car while he was driving. The driver appeared to be heading toward West Branch. Authorities were able to stop it and rescue the child.
"It appears there was a domestic violence incident that occurred, and this gentleman in the process, grabbed the 1 year old daughter, put her in the truck and went to take off and he actually hit his own mother when he was leaving," Chief Alexander told NBC25.
Police say that woman is now in serious condition.
