Update: July 20th, 12:25 p.m.

WOOD TV  reports Dierre Coteat is expected to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon for assault charges.

Investigators say it does not appear that the driver of the pickup truck was speeding, using his cell phone, or under the influence of alcohol at the time of the tragedy.

A two-year-old has died after being struck by a pick-up truck, and the driver of that vehicle has been hospitalized after being stabbed.

WOOD TV reports it happened in Grand Rapids Monday evening. Police say Javonni Conley ran into the road to retreive a ball.  A man driving a pickup truck tried to swerve out of the way, but hit the child.  The child died from the impact.

The child's stepfather, 22-year-old Dierre Coteat, saw the accident, and ran out to the scene. He then proceeded to stab the driver in the chest. The driver was rushed to the hospital. He is expected to survive.

Coteat ran from the scene, but police tracked him down and arrested him. He remains in the Kent County Jail and faces felony assault charges.
