CHESANING -- Update: August 2nd, 9:45 p.m.

Chesaning voters have passed the millage by a landslide. 466 voted yes, 169 voted no. For complete election results, click here.

Chesaning voters are asked to say yes to a library millage.

Since 1970, the Chesaning Public Library has been funded by a millage, but in March, the library has been operating as a district library in need of more funding.

The funding from the millage is crucial to the citizens of Chesaning for many reasons such as employment, education and enjoyment.

For a resident who owns a home worth $100,000, with a taxable value of $50,000, the cost is $50 a year. "Most people pay $500 or more per year for cable. I think the pay off for $50 for library service, we have the wealth of the world here so how can you not," Meredith Adelman, the library board secretary, stated.

The library has already made painful cuts, including staff layoffs and decreased hours of operation.

If the millage doesn’t pass, within three years the library could be forced to shut their doors.
