FLINT TOWNSHIP -- Michigan State Police confirmed to NBC25 Thursday night that an off-duty trooper suffered a massive heart attack while driving on southbound I-75 and later died.

Forty-one year old David Stokes managed to pull off onto the shoulder of the highway, just before the construction zone at the Miller Road exit. He died at the scene.

He leaves behind a wife and three children.

He was a 14-year veteran of the Michigan State Police Flint Post. He had received the department's Bravery Award in 1999, Lifesaving Award in 2008, and Unit Citation in 2008.

Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, director of the MSP states, "The Michigan State Police is mourning the loss of a great trooper today. Trooper Stokes’ dedication to service will be his legacy.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends in this difficult time.”
